Last week, NYSBA President David Donovan participated in a panel at the Radio/TV Forecast in New York City. The one-day event was hosted by Radio Ink and Radio Television Business Report. The focus of the panel was to predict issues confronting broadcasters in 2025. The panel was moderated by Seth Williams, Attorney at Fletcher, Heald & Hildreth, and included Gray Television SVP of Government Relations and Distribution Robert Folliard, National Association of Broadcasters Chief Legal Officer Rick Kaplan, and Beasley Media Group EVP and General Counsel Chris Ornelas.
The panel, which discussed a wide array of issues, took place before FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr was nominated to become Chairman of the FCC. There was a consensus that the new FCC would look to relax broadcast ownership regulations. In addition, the panel agreed that the FCC’s current moves to reregulate broadcasting will end. Accordingly, the FCC is unlikely to move forward with new political AI rules. However, those efforts are likely to shift to state legislatures. The panel also discussed a Supreme Court Case striking down the Securities Exchange Commission’s authority to impose fines, which could affect the FCC’s ability to assess fines on stations. The panel discussed the importance of moving forward with the AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act this year.
