FCC Broadcast Totals – Non-Commercial Radio Stations Increase


The FCC has released its quarterly count of broadcast stations in the U.S.A. broadcast. According to the Commission, there are 33,305 broadcast facilities of all types operating in the US. The number of full-power radio and TV stations is as follows. 


RADIO TOTAL: 15,395 (Full Power)

·         AM STATIONS 4,400

·         FM COMMERCIAL 6,618

·         FM EDUCATIONAL 4,377


TELEVISION TOTAL: 1,766 (Full Power)

·         UHF COMMERCIAL TV 1,026

·         VHF COMMERCIAL TV 358

·         UHF EDUCATIONAL TV 268

·         VHF EDUCATIONAL TV 114


Comparing these numbers to last year’s data shows that there are 52 fewer commercial AM stations and 52 fewer commercial FM stations. However, non-commercial FM stations increased by 114 stations. For UHF TV stations, there were 14 more commercial stations and 2 more non-commercial stations. With regard to VHF TV stations, there were 7 fewer commercial stations and 3 fewer noncommercial stations.
