Gallup has released a new survey regarding the public’s trust in the mass media. The percentage of those who completely distrust the media increased 5 points since 2019. According to the new report:
“ [T]the public remains largely distrustful of the mass media. Four in 10 U.S. adults say they have “a great deal” (9%) or “a fair amount” (31%) of trust and confidence in the media to report the news “fully, accurately, and fairly,” while six in 10 have “not very much” trust (27%) or “none at all” (33%).”
These numbers should raise concern among broadcast journalists. Also disconcerting is the fact that trust in the media appears to be a function of a person’s politics. According to the analysis Democrats trust the media more than Republicans.
As journalists, we need to work to earn the trust of all Americans, regardless of their political persuasion.
