Albany NY: Regarding today’s vote by the Senate Commerce Committee supporting the PIRATE Act (S.1228), David Donovan, President of the New York State Broadcasters Association, Inc. (NYSBA) stated:
“NYSBA wants to thank members of the Senate Commerce Committee for their unanimous support of the bipartisan PIRATE Act. We especially want to thank Senator Steve Daines (R. MT) and Senator Gary Peters (D. MI) for introducing S.1228. This could not have been done without the leadership and support of Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R. MS) and Ranking Member Senator Maria Cantwell (D. WA).
With this unanimous vote, we move another step closer to giving the FCC the tools it needs to address the growing illegal pirate radio problem. Illegal pirate radio continues to be a problem in New York. They interfere with airport communications and Emergency Alert Services (EAS). Illegal stations disregard all FCC and consumer protection laws. While the FCC has increased its enforcement efforts, additional tools are needed to address this vexing problem.
NYSBA looks forward to working with the Senate to ensure passage of the PIRATE Act (S. 1228). We urge members of the Senate to take quick action on this bipartisan legislation.”
