For years, New York State has operated with two dates for primary elections. In 2018, the Federal primary elections were held in June. New York State primary elections were held in September. The legislation (S.1103 & A.779) would now require State primary elections to be held on the same date as the Federal primary. No date has been set for the 2020 primary elections.
From a broadcaster’s perspective, moving both primaries to the same date could mean a greater demand for political time. Of course this would depend on whether there were hotly contested races for both federal and state offices.
