House Passes “PIRATE” Act – On to the Senate

Sometimes Congress can work in a bipartisan manner.  Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the PIRATE Act by a voice vote. We want to thank Congressman Paul Tonko (D NY 20th) for co-sponsoring this legislation and Congressman Chris Collins (R NY 27th) for his leadership on this issue.  Without them, this bill would not exist.

The bill increases fines for pirate operators up to $2 million, creates liability for property owners that allow pirates to operate on their property, requires the FCC to conduct an annual enforcement sweep, requires the FCC to establish a new pirate database, streamlines the enforcement process, and recognizes state laws that make pirate operations illegal.

We now shift our efforts to the Senate.  Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been a strong supporter of greater pirate enforcement.
