2012 Youth Employment Program
We have notified 76 stations across the state that they won an internship for 2012. Winning stations have until April 30th to inform Sandy Messineo of their plans for hiring. After the deadline has passed, we will then notify backup stations that they can now eligible to hire an intern for 2012. Any questions, please email sandy@nysbroadcasters.org The NYSBA Internship Program allows you to hire an intern for a maximum of 180 hours at a reimbursable rate of $7.25 per hour. This program is available to all NYSBA dues paying members and the program is made possible through your time to our NCSA program.
Summary Description of Project
It is the intention of this program to provide participating students (to be known as "interns") the opportunity to witness and experience "first hand" the operational procedures of a radio or television station.
Eligibility Requirements
It is the intent of this program to actively recruit and hire interns that are:- at least 17 years of age, but less than 22 at time of entry;
- high school or undergraduate college students;
- residents of New York State or attending school in New York State;
- first time entrants into the program;
- relatives of employees are ineligible to participate.
The Selection Process
Recruitment - As the program seeks to attract potential candidates on a competitive basis, all participating stations should:
- Advertise the NYSBA Intern Program on the air (suggested copy enclosed)
- Circulate announcements to educational institutions and programs.
Selection - The final selection is at the station's discretion. All interns should apply for the program via written letter of application, in addition to the station's normal hiring procedure. Following the selection of your candidate, complete and return the questionnaire to the NYSBA office in Albany.
Program Parameters
An agreement reached by the Board of Directors of the NYS Broadcasters Association will allow seventy six (76) stations to participate in the program with a reimbursement for training at a maximum of $1,305.00. The reimbursement will be in the form of wages at $7.25/per hour for a maximum of 180 hours. The station may decide to independently hire the intern for more hours or for more money per hour.
Training
After an orientation session designed to introduce the intern to their new training environment, the intern should be exposed to the full gamut of experiences germane to the broadcasting industry. The intern training developed by the participating stations should include the areas outlined in the enclosed NYSBA checklist. Once exposed to the various departments in the station, the intern and his/her manager should choose an area of interest for more sophisticated training. (This should occur after one-half to two-thirds of the internship is completed.)
Measurable Objectives
- Provide an exploratory training experience in the broadcast industry for seventy six (76) New York State student interns.
- Monitor the intern's progress utilizing the NYSBA's Department Checklist.
- Maintain the over 90% completion rate of interns from previous years.
Quality Control
At the conclusion of the internship, a final report must be forwarded to the NYSBA and must contain the following:
- A written evaluation of the experience by the supervisor on the intern's performance and attitude, as well as comments regarding the program in general.
- A written evaluation of the experience by the intern including the intern's intentions to further a career in broadcastings
- Copies of time cards/sheets signed by the intern and station management. Without copies of the intern's signed time sheets, the NYSBA cannot prove the intern's employment at the station, thereby jeopardizing reimbursement.
- The return of the NYSBA Intern Department Checklist and the completed Independent Contractor's Agreement.
